Lock, Stock & Barrel, Hereford

The lock, stock and barrel were the three elements that comprised the early gun. They were all that was needed and consequently the phrase "lock, stock and barrel" came to mean just that i.e. all, everything, the totality. This hardware business in Hereford adopted the name because the proprietor wanted to draw the public's attention to the very wide range of goods on sale. So many, in fact, that they daily spill out of the shop onto the pavement and, with the home-made signage, give the exterior an old-fashioned, Victorian or early twentieth century, appearance. Look carefully and you will see that it is partially hiding the public litter bin. Furthermore, the hand tools on the extreme right extend, out of shot, in front of the adjoining (now closed) premises.

BHS, Hull

When, in 1971, I moved from the Yorkshire Dales market town of Settle to the East Yorkshire city and port of Kingston upon Hull, it was something of a culture shock. The countryside, hills, mountains, valleys and villages of the Dales were replaced by the imposing city buildings and flat, urban sprawl of the city. I was often asked if I regretted the move and my answer was always the same - "No"- because the visual interest and history of the city was something that I appreciated and which provided a seemingly endless supply of subjects for my camera. One of the most noticeable buildings was the BHS store in the main shopping area. This former Co-operative store has a huge, fine and imposing, concave mural of 1963 by Alan Boyson that references the city's fishing fleet.

AllSaints store, London

I have little time for fashion in clothing. It seems to me to be a way to encourage people to buy often impractical items before the clothes they own have reached the end of their life. But style and design, in clothing do interest me. I know nothing about the clothing store called ALLSAINTS and the only branch I've ever seen is the one on Commercial Road in London that I came across recently. The illuminated advert looking down on the shoppers passing and entering the premises appealed to the photographer in me.
