I started this blog when I found I had insufficient time to devote to PhotoReflect, the photoblog I had run for 11 years involving 2,265 post with 2,300+ photographs. My aim with that blog was to publish a photograph and an accompanying written "reflection" that was either directly related to the image or arose from my thoughts surrounding the image. I think that worked quite well for a number of years, but as time wore on I seemed to wear out: or at least I lost my enthusiasm for the written reflections.
However, my interest in photography continues unabated, hence PhotoEclectica. My aim with this photoblog is more limited - to publish a selection of my better photographs, with a little contextual information and not much else. That means no comments too, so anyone wishing to get in touch has to email me (tbphotoreflect@gmail.com)
My focus in photography lies in the pictures themselves. Though I've used cameras by Olympus, Canon, Panasonic, Fuji, Sony and Nikon over the years I'm not deeply interested in the technology beyond ensuring I can make it do what I want. Moreover, I have no favoured make. For those who are interested I currently use a pair of Olympus OMD E-M10 cameras, a Sony DSC-RX100 and a Nikon P900 (for birds only). I also have a Nikon D5300 that I use occasionally but I much prefer the smaller formats. I had a Canon 5D Mk2 for a number of years, but fine camera though it was, the weight of the body and lenses was a big drawback. Just about every camera these days, including quite a few phone cameras, are capable of producing publication-quality images, and most models with sensors 1" and larger can cover 90% of photographic subjects. The cameras I use cover all the areas I want to photograph but I recognise that they are not ideal for some specialist subjects.
Why PhotoEclectica? Simply because I am an eclectic photographer - I choose a very wide range of subjects and have no specialism.
