Peace in the woods

As I scanned the woods below me from a spot half way up the Malvern Hills near West Malvern I spotted the icongruous and unfortunate work of a graffitist on a small building at the edge of a clearing, a written intrusion into a peaceful scene.

Fog, frost and sun

On a frosty, foggy morning we set out for a brisk walk over the nearby hills. As we walked down a lane the sun was starting to disperse the fog and reveal the nearby landscape of stubble field, pasture, hedges and woods. A diffuse shaft of light worked its magic on the scene and turned the unprepossessing features into something of greater interest.

Chase Hill, Ross on Wye

The distinctive profile of the wooded Chase Hill is visible from all of the major roads as you approach Ross on Wye. The summit is the site of an Iron Age hill fort, so the defensible location must always have attracted attention. It is likely that the hill was less wooded in the distant past, but from medieval times it probably looked much as it does today, though the coastal redwoods were added by the Victorians. The wood is owned by the Forestry Commission, and is a popular place for walkers, joggers and those interested in natural history.
