Cafe and boiled egg

As we passed a pavement cafe in Cheltenham I did a double take and walked back to get a photograph of the artwork and outdoor furniture. The egg in its cup makes an interesting focus for the composition, and as I went on my way I wondered just how popular boiled eggs served in an egg cup are today. They are something that I associate with childhood breakfasts. But perhaps I'm not typical.

Earth in the abbey

A quick trip to Tewkesbury found us in the abbey confronted by a surprise - a massive model of the earth as seen from space filled the nave. It was part of the touring artwork called "Gaia", a multimedia installation by the U.K. artist Luke Jerram. The seating of the nave had been removed to allow the public to walk underneath and around the slowly rotating model.

Sculpture trail, Forest of Dean

A number of years ago the Forestry Commission, who manage much of the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, established a "sculpture trail" in the woodland. It is a footpath several miles long that is punctuated by art works. One of the most striking is "Cathedral" by Kevin Atherton. It was erected in 1986 and remarkably, considering how it must be affected by the weather, it still gives pleasure today. In autumn the colours of the piece compete with the natural beauty on show. In winter it glows, jewel-like, against the more sombre colours of that season.
